 A young man went missing while swimming off Dewees front beach yesterday.

A full-fledged search and rescue mission was activated which included the Coast Guard, Isle of Palms Fire Department ,Dewees Island Public Safety and Island Resident volunteers. After several hours of active searching the man was located alive and well on Isle of Palms. He'd swum the front beach of Dewees as well as Dewees Inlet to the Isle of Palms. He was very fortunate that he didn't drown as this is a dangerous activity.

Kevin Cordell led the search and rescue effort for Dewees Island Public Safety Department.

 

 

New Ferry

Tripp Hanna, Dewees Port Captain and Kim Knight, the General Manager inspected construction progress on the new ferry in Sebring Florida 

August 7^th 2013.

New high-tech Cummings Engine as well as the beginnings of the seating arrangement.

Dewees Islander Generator Repair

 

We have had a problem with the boat's generator quitting unexpectedly.

Kevin Cordell , Dewees Island Public Safety firemen and mechanic and 

Tripp Hannah seem to have isolated the insidious problem for us on Sunday.

The generator has been running every day this week with out a hitch.

Dewees Staff Electrifying Week

Intense Storm over Dewees yesterday.

 

 

At 1445 Hours lightning struck a large pine tree and traveled 

through the ground to a metal sewer valve 20 feet away.

 

Lightning instantaneously boiled the sewerage within the sewer main 

blowing 3 feet of the pipe apart.

Staff Randy,Terry,Robert and Ryan dig for the source of the problem.

1830 Hours Problem Solved : a new section of sewer main pipe was installed.

PLEASE CHECK YOUR HOMES FOR DAMAGE

Because of the ferocity of the storm there may be latent damage to your home's electrical components and utility systems.

Please monitor your sewer pump station over the next few weeks and let the Utility Company know if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

Condition of Roads

Unfortunately our roads are in a fair driving condition after the storm last night which dumped 4 inches of rain.We will not be able to improve them until next week or when they are dry enough for grading.

In preparation for road repairs the POA received three truckloads of shell sand today .

Another Electrical Event

Dewees Island Public Safety received a call of a power outage at a house last Thursday at 2150 hrs. caused by an electrical short under SCE&G's transformer.

The connecting wires burned with such force that the surrounding sand formed a glass ball( which Fire Chief Randy Snipes is holding)Richie McWethy a Dewees Fireman assisted SCE&G who used the POA's Lull to lift the transformer out of the way while they affected the repair .SCE&G left the island at 0245 hours.
