The Islander Returned to Service

Islander has been at the boatyard where we made repairs to her bottom  and fixed miscellaneous gel coat issues  . She also received cosmetic work including new vinyl stripes , full detailing of her hull and bottom paint. The engines which had 3400 hours on them have been swapped out for the original pair that were rebuilt under warranty by Yamaha.

 

Staff Realigned

 

Terry who was in charge of facility maintenance for the POA will now train to be our Operator in Charge under our Contract Operator in Charge Paul Conover .

Grounds maintenance man Robert Fischer will take over Terry's old job as Facility Maintenance Technician for all Dewees Island POA and Utility Company buildings, docks, ramps and marina .

Neither ice nor sleet nor snow nor gloom of night stays the Dewees Staff from the completion of their appointed rounds.

January 2014 has proved to be a challenging month for Dewees Owners and Staff.

Frigid winter weather periodically throughout the month created unusual opportunities for staff.

Winter hardened Northerner Ryan teaches Robert the finer points of ice and snow removal on Dewees IOP docks.

Staff risk icy roads to get the ferry going and report to work early Thursday morning after the day and a half Charleston ice storm shutdown.

A special commendation goes to Fire Chief Randy Snipes and fireman Kevin  Cordell who rode out the storm on Dewees.

They cleared downed trees from the roads for fire truck and owner access. Also kept buildings and ramps accessible.

Most importantly roads were cleared  for that most intrepid of Deweesians the Wednesday morning Ladies Round Table Group who were undaunted by the storm and met during icy , sleeting conditions at the Huyler House for coffee and tea.

FERRY FLEET HAPPENINGS

The Dewees Breeze electronic gear shift mechanism failed last week causing us to use the 6 passenger 25 ft.Parker.Thanks to quick action by Tripp Hannah POA Port Captain a new under warranty mechanism was installed and the ferry was back in service in two days. 

The Dewees Islander is in the boat yard for the Coast Guard annual inspection , engine replacement,bottom paint and miscellaneous repairs.We have been delayed in our work because of the unseasonable weather, but expect the boat to return to service next week .

Dewees Lady Sold

1.27.2014 a truck picked up the Lady to transport her to the new owner in Maryland. Thus ends the history for Dewees of a much maligned but stalwart craft.

Paul & Ryan , Dewees Utility repair a water main leak on Dewees Inlet

 Robert & Fire Chief Randy Snipes replace shattered water lines at Dewees front dock

A number of Homes on Dewees suffered broken water inlet lines from two days of freezing temperatures.

 To prevent water loss the Utility has turned off the water to the homes affected and informed the owner.

Home Owners are encouraged to call your maintenance person to check your home for potential leaks.

Staff Christmas 2013 & Other Happenings

Dewees Staff wish to thank David and Barbara McIntyre for inviting them to their home for coffee to celebrate the Holidays.

 to all those who donated to the Staff Holiday Fund.

Each year many of the staff rely on this fund for help with gifts and travel costs for their family. Your help is very much appreciated and contributes greatly to staff moral.

Public Safety Department

The DIPSD participated in one successful helicopter evacuation of a resident  as well as did several training exercises with the Roper Hospital Helicopter in the past month.

On December 11 Ferry crew Wesley and DIPSD worked together to put out a small potentially serious electrical fire in the railing of the Dewees front dock . Thank you to residents Emilie and Brian Hatch for raising the alarm.

Roadside Brush Removal

All island staff have restarted the major overgrown brush removal project on the island we worked on last year. We are attempting to finish clearing all 5 miles of overgrown brush from the Utility and POA road easements by the summer season next year. We are currently working on Old House Lane.

Progress Continues on the Skiff

Ryan & Robert recently painted environmentally appropriate bottom paint on the boat subsequent to its repair.

Fire-safety & Back Flow Prevention Inspections

Chief Randy Snipes and Ryan Auker completed inspections during October. Reports are now in and will be mailed to the home owners when administration time allows.

DEWEES BREEZE & HOLIDAY FERRY SCHEDULE

The Dewees Breeze Ran it's inaugural trip at 12.30pm. today (11.20.2013) with passengers Jim Anderson , Anne Anderson,Connie Drew, Ginnie Moser,David Smith, Betty Anglin Smith ( artist guest of Timmons) and Mojo ( David's faithful sidekick) , Captain Mat Luzon & mate Tim Bennis were the crew.

The Breeze will be used on a regular basis so it is important that everyone who is leaving Dewees Island telephones the ferry 843 568 3990 to request a run.

So we may serve you,when you call, please inform the crew how many passengers & pets are in your party and the number of carts you predict you will need for luggage. There is a large area for carry on luggage inside the ferry also.

Dewees Boat Yard

Renewal of the Skiff

Using historic precedence and in a cost saving exercise we set up our own boat yard on Dewees recently.

After 8 years the supply skiff ( Sea Ark) for the island needed renovation .

Corrosion had affected the keel and it needed to be replaced.

Dewees Staff Ryan , Robbie and Terry grind down the boat to get to good metal for welding .

The boat is currently off the island after being re-welded at a total cost for the project of $1537 . Saving the POA $8,463 over the cost of a new commercial Sea-Ark.

We will repaint the boat when we receive the paint shipment, then the boat should be good for another 8 years.
